Greetings from the Rear!

By Janell Lundgren R/C

Well, we are now in the “dog days of summer” which I recently found out has nothing to do with the heat of summer, nor dogs in the way we think of dogs,  our canine companions, but rather of Sirius, the dog star, and its position in the heavens.   According to a  National Geographic article I read, it is a time the Greeks and Romans noted that the Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July.  They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year. This past weekend, fortunately, was not very hot, but actually quite nice and I hope a lot of you were able to enjoy it!

Last weekend, HBYC hosted the rescheduled Stein Hospice Race in the Bay.  As compared to the strong winds that caused the rescheduling of the fund-raising race, this past Saturday saw light winds but enough to allow the race to take place.   There were 13 racing vessels (a record number of participants)  in two classes that participated and $600 in entrance fees were collected for Stein Hospice, in addition to the money that was raised by the 50/50 raffle and the donation of $500 that would have been used for dinner and entertainment  totaling $988.00.  Given the circumstances of the year of 2020, a $1,588.00 donation, as my Mom would say “that’s not too shabby!”

Also, last Saturday, there was a Scavenger Hunt at SHM that was organized by Social Coordinator Genie Barthelman.  A lively group, including a lot youngsters, participated in this event.  Everyone had  a lot of fun and I must say, as a participant, it was great exercise and it gave me an excuse to check out all of the docks in the marina, and see boats and meet people that I ordinarily would not see.   I think we should make this an annual event, as it was great to have so many young people engaged in a yacht club activity!

We have another cruising event coming up on the 22nd of August, an anchor out in Sandusky Bay, which will be weather dependant.    This trip will be lead by John Lueke.  As he decribes this event to“ provide an opportunity for people who have not anchored overnight to try it with plenty of other people around for support. The first choice for an anchoring spot would be west of Johnson’s Island near the Dempsey access ramp. This spot works well in east thru west northwest winds and has a mud bottom for a good anchor hold. If the wind goes farther south and blows over five knots we would need to try another spot. It would be a short dingy ride to the shore for people with dogs or others who wanted to go ashore for a walk. Couldn’t find any bars in the area to dingy to but we could go from boat to boat with the appropriate cautions. We could provide dingy taxi service For people without dinghies, if you are interested in trying this, send a message to Doug Asbury, Cruising Coordinatorl. We would have a skippers meeting at 10am on the 22nd to finalize the plan. We could also visit boats to check their anchoring equipment if the skipper is not sure about it.”

The last social/racing event of the year is Robby’s Voice Regatta and 100 ticket Reverse Raffle.  In the Reverse Raffle, we will  be raffling off items from the Ship’s Store to clear our inventory as well as other items, including a Beautiful Quilt donated by Melanic Hitch.    I am also requesting that our members create items to be raffled off like gift baskets ~wine and cheese baskets, nautical themed baskets, whatever you can come up with, to raise money for Robby’s Voice.  We will also be raffling off Dockage Fees donated by the Marina, up to $2,000.00, in a separate raffle.    We are also selling clothing items from the Ship’s store for $10.00 on a clearance rack at the Yacht Club to raise money.  As of last Saturday night, we already had raised over $200.00 in donations to Robby’s Voice!

We have two more cruises left to do in September, the ever popular Vermillion Cruise and the cruise to Lorain.  If you have any interest get in touch with Cruising Coordinator Doug Asbury and get your name on the list.

Til next time, fair winds,

Janell

Online Ship’s Store is Ready to Use!

Tim Kemerley - Vice commodore

During the last few weeks, we have made good progress on establishing the Ship’s Store online capability. After a series of discussions involving people from Parrot Sportsgear, ProForma Albrecht Company, Kevin Irwin, Marge Gross, and me, we have a better understanding of the business, the ordering process, and the security issues involved.

Screen shot of HBYC Online Order Form

Screen shot of HBYC Online Order Form

Below is a description of these activities and the new online order form.

  1. Past: Pre-web days, HBYC made bulk orders of apparel, etc. from Parrot Sportsgear. The purchased items were either picked up at the Bellbrook, OH site or shipped to the clubhouse. A decision was made about what the club members wanted, and bulk orders were made from requests. The club paid for these items upfront, and members purchased them, and in effect, reimbursed the club. Work was started to take the Ship’s Store online. Erinn Petsch headed up the transition to an online capability. We thank her for her initial work.

  2. Concept of Operations: We are now establishing an online order form (not an online store) with Parrot Sportsgear. An online store requires a large setup fee and monthly fees, and it is not what a small club needs to acquire limited apparel. Parrot Sportsgear is teamed with a very large organization, ProForma Albrecht Co., which handles the invoicing and payment aspects of the apparel order. More information on security issues will be discussed below. There are basically two types of orders - individual and bulk. The individual order involves having apparel embroidered with the HBYC logo, etc. These items can be ordered one at a time by a club member. The second type of order is the bulk order that uses quantity to get the price down. These bulk orders can be screen printed t-shirts, key chains, pens, cups, etc., where quantities (e.g. 25-100) are ordered by the club and not by the online order form. To set up an online order form, HBYC pays Parrot Sportsgear ~$50 to design a form that has about 8-12 items listed on the form This form is online and individual club members can pick sizes and colors and order/pay with a credit card. The items are directly shipped to the customer's address. If we want to change the order form to add/subtract new items a $50 fee is charged. This change could happen each year or more often if members want more options. Marge Gross and I have worked with Parrot Sportswear to create an order form.

  3. Security: Kevin Irwin was in contact with the ProForma Albrecht Co. security personnel concerning how our credit card purchases will be handled, and what type of security measures to safeguard our private information will be followed. Below is the company's e-mail response that he received: "We have several ecommerce platforms all of which are PCI level 1 compliant. In regards to HBYC, here are some of the key payment security protocols we implement as a part of the payment processing:

    • We use Microsoft Azure; a highly available, cloud-based, and secure hosting environment. This environment is both BAA (HIPAA) and PCI (DSS) level 1 compliant.

    • The payment processors offered (Stripe or Square) are all PCI Level 1 compliant

    • User card data are never transmitted, processed or stored by our websites or forms, The transaction data are transmitted directly from the user’s browser to Stripe (or Square) payment processors.

    • No card data are ever kept, stored or collected at any time."

Both Kevin and I think that ProForma Albrecht's approach is first rate, and is as safe as currently possible for these types of transactions.

  4. Clubhouse: A display case will be located in the club house that will contain a very limited number of items, such as hats, decals, etc., for direct purchase. The old Ship’s Store room will be repurposed for other club activities in the future. There are still some items for purchase in the Ship’s Store room as we transition to setting up the display case. Hats are now available for purchase. 5. Way Forward: We are including the Parrot Sportsgear online order form website in our HBYC website so club members can order apparel items. Marge Gross will be the HBYC focal point for the Ship’s Store. She will handle bulk orders. Please contact her with your questions and comments.

The new HBYC online order form will be accessed from the Members Only Section of the Website.

Stein Hospice Race in the Bay Rescheduled

By P/C and Race Director - Larry Hurst

We had six boats sign up for the race last Saturday. The sun came out and it was a beautiful day with wind consistently at or above our 20 knot limit. The gusts would have made for some sporty / spirited sailing, unfortunately we had to abandon the race.

Attached is the Notice of Race for the RITB rescheduled for Aug 8. Click here to learn more —> Stein Hospice RITB Reschedule

This will be in place of the second Cruiser Fun Race. If you registered to race and paid the entry fee, you do not have to do it again. We also welcome anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Stein Hospice has reopened the window to order t-shirts until July 29. You can order by calling Tamara —-> Call for a shirt

Greetings from the Rear Commodore:

Hi everyone,  just wanted to give you updates about this coming weekend.  We have a fun weekend planned and I hope that many of you will be able to join us this Saturday, July 11th for a full day of activities.   Starting out with Race-In -The-Bay for Stein Hospice, the Skippers meeting is going to be held at 10:00 AM at the HBYC Club House (note, this is a different time than what it says on the calendar on our website).  We ask that only the Skippers attend so that social distancing can be maintained.    The  Race itself will start around 12 Noon.  All details about the race can be directed to Larry Hurst, Race Committee Chairman at (614)395-8035, at lhurst@columbus.rr.com, or see him in person at Dock C-101 Sandusky Harbor Marina.  After the race, there will be a General Membership Meeting at the clubhouse starting at 4 pm.  This meeting will be held both in person and virtually via Zoom to make sure we can accommodate as many as possible in the safest way possible.

A separate email will be sent with the Zoom meeting link.

After the meeting from 4-5 pm, we will plan on breaking for dinner on your own and then reconvene  at 7 pm for the start of Game Night. We will be gathering outside to have some fun doing Bocce Ball, Cornhole (beanbag toss) or other outdoor games.  Please feel free to bring a game with you if you have any that you would like to share.   At 8 pm, we will be having a 50/50 raffle.  Please see any trustee, Bridge Officer or Committee officer to purchase tickets.  The proceeds will be going to Stein Hospice.  The tickets are $1.00 a piece, 6 for $5.00, 13 tickets for $10 (or 26 for $20.00 !).    Please purchase tickets and let's raise some money for a good cause.

Due to the fact that we were unable to do our usual social event with food and entertainment, we appropriated those funds for a direct donation to Stein Hospice.  We will holding the raffle virtually via the same Zoom link noted above.   If you want to purchase tickets and are not going to be in attendance, we can arrange a virtual payment scenario.  Let me know if you want to do this, and hopefully, I can figure out an acceptable way to do this given our need for such technology in the age of COVID-19.  I hope all of you are well and enjoying your summer.   If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach out to me at this email address.

Until then, my best, Janell Lundgren, Rear Commodore
